One of the definitions of RSS is
"Really Simple Syndication". It is a way
to easily distribute a list of headlines, notice of
breaking news, and sometimes content to a wide number
of people. An RSS feed is sometimes called an "RSS
Channel." More info at Wikipedia.
How does RSS work?
RSS works by having the web site
publisher, in this instance, irinfo.org, maintain
a list of headlines on our web site. This list of
headlines is called an "RSS Feed." You
can see the RSS Feed at irinfo.org by going here:

rss feed.
What can I do with RSS?
As a person or company that is
interested in staying current concerning infrared,
NDT, and PdM issues, RSS can supply you with relevant
information. And, the great advantage is that this
information will come to you so you don't
need to search for it or check a web site to see
what's new.
How can I receive the IRINFO.ORG
News Feed?
The first thing you will need is
special software called an "RSS Aggregator."
There are many aggregators available for free as well
as some that are available for purchase. You can find
a selection of aggregators, sometimes called "News
Readers," at this
web site.
Some e-mail programs such as Microsoft
Outlook also allow you do receive an RSS feed at the
same time that you download your e-mail.
Now I have an Aggregator. What's
Next?
Every aggregator is different
but each one will allow you to create an incoming
news feed that interests you. Thus, somewhere in the
aggregator software you will be given the option to
"create a new RSS feed." And that is where
you will enter the location of the irinfo.org RSS
news feed which is listed below:
You can just copy and paste the
above line into the appropriate location into your
news aggregator.
Now you only need to run your aggregator
in automatic mode; that is, to have it start automatically
when your computer starts. It should then go off to
the internet every so often to see if the news feed
from irinfo.org has been updated. It the aggregator
finds an update, it will download the news headlines
to your computer. Then, when you read a headline that
interests you, just click on it and you'll be able
to read the full story.
How Can I Find Other News Feeds
that I Might Like?
Good question. When you visit a
web site that has material that interests you look
for the little graphic that looks like this:
By clicking on that button, you
will be taken to the location of the RSS News Feed
for that web site. You then enter that location into
your aggregator just as you did with the location
for the irinfo.org location above.
